Avoiding asbestos-contamination when you remodel

asbestos claims

You might be wondering why I am talking about asbestos-contamination and mesothelioma on my house building site. The problem lies in remodeling projects.

During times like these when new home construction is at a low, people like to buy fixer-uppers instead of new homes.

This is when I have to give a word of caution about asbestos products, their removal, and the dangers of diseases like mesothelioma. This is a lung cancer caused by breathing in microscopic asbestos particles that get stuck in the lungs or other organs and cause inflammation and can eventually cause terminal cancer.

asbestos First of all, I have to say that probably all of us have been exposed to asbestos to some degree and most of us won't have any problems at all.

It has a lot to do with the amount of asbestos particles and the duration of inhalation or how long you have been exposed to them. These particles are like microscopic cacti or shards of glass that get stuck in the lung lining.

There are many building products that were and still are made using asbestos. Here in the United States we have all but banned them. Homes built before the 1980's are more likely to have asbestos products installed.

Most homes that have asbestos materials are still safe as long as the materials aren't broken, cut, or burned. It's when the particles are airborne that they are the most dangerous.

People are more aware of the dangers of mesothelioma and other cancers caused by asbestos. Mesothelioma lawyers are very busy these days.

asbestos roofs

There are many types of roof tiles made of asbestos.

asbestos insulation

Because of its insulation and heat retention properties, asbestos has been used mostly for insulation.

ceiling tiles

Because of its sound insulation properties as well as its heat retention properties, asbestos has been used a lot in ceiling tiles and noise absorption tiles. The acoustic tiles were used frequently in the ceilings of gymnasiums and concert halls.
