Wall preparation for bathroom-renovation-ideas

When you draw up your home construction plans and bathroom-renovation-ideas or diy bathroom renovation plans, you need to be sure to plan on using the right kind of wall board. If you use plain sheetrock in high humidity areas, the walls can start to mold and rot.

To start off, we need to make sure the walls have adequate protection against moisture.

Regular sheetrock should not be used in bathrooms. It is becoming more and more common to use cement board or backer board for the walls.

This not only protects against rot and mildew, but is also a solid surface to attach tile and tub and shower surrounds to.

taping cement board

Cement board can be taped with a special fiberglass mesh tape and latex cement. It doesn’t need any more than one coat. A tiled bathroom wall can be absolutely gorgeous if done correctly. New tile should be a part of any bathroom renovation because it improves the value of the home.

Once the cement board is in place you will need to tape the joints with special adhesive netting and then put one layer of cement board compound over the tape. This helps make a better moisture seal and sound seal.

Cement board and backer board is the same thing. It really helps make a stable wall to attach tile to. The weight of bathroom tile can be a lot, so it makes sense to apply it to a strong wall.

There are special screws for the cement board that you buy where you get the board. Be careful not to screw into any plumbing or electrical lines. The cement board should be screwed into wall framing studs.
