Construction-walls and framework

These are some photos of our construction-walls and framework from start to finish. We dug out the foundation and measured it so it was exactly square. We poured the footings first and let them dry for a week and then poured the foundation on top of them. You can pour the footing and the foundation all at once depending on how you build the forms.

We was able to save money by using the forms as floor joists, but this made it so we had to do two different pours of cement. No big deal at all though.

Then we nailed boards in place to start the first floor. This is called a rim joist and it makes the job of attaching the joists much easier.

We attached 2X10's in place for the floor joists. Most carpenters now use composite floor joists which are cheaper.

We covered the floor joists with the first floor sheathing. This can be plywood or Oriented Strand Board. This is a good place to use screws so the floor sheathing doesn't easily work its way loose over the years and cause squeaky floors.

Then we started on the walls. We decided to use 2X6 walls so we could put more insulation in to make it more energy efficient. We made all the window and door headers as part of the framework.

And then the stairs to get up and down without having to use a ladder. Our home is a two story home and many two story homes install the stairs last to avoid causing damage to the stair materials. We just needed to get up and down so we installed the stairs as soon as we could.
