So are we getting colder and less friendly as a society? Definitely, but there are a few interesting points to remember before we judge ourselves too harshly. Living rooms were not only a room to entertain guests in, but they was also a confinement barrier to keep people from exploring the rest of your house. It was common knowledge that to progress beyond the Living room in someone else's home uninvited was very bad manners. As a modern society, we are eliminating the socializing room. A pessimist would look at it that way. At the same time, we are eliminating the confinement barrier and making our homes more available to invited guests. We are by-passing the living room tradition and letting our guests directly into our family rooms. We are in a sense, letting our guests into our places of rest and retreat. Take it however you want. It's just a house, but I always have to get all philosophical about everything. Enough of that, here's some beautiful living room plans that are economical to build.
Living rooms are still popular in some areas. If the local styles indicate that planning a living room is a good idea to make your home worth more, then by all means, do it. It's all about making the home valuable in case it needs to be sold.
