I'm seeing many house plans that no longer include living rooms. The days of sitting quietly in the parlor and talking with neighbors family and friends are going away.

So are we getting colder and less friendly as a society? Definitely, but there are a few interesting points to remember before we judge ourselves too harshly.

Living rooms were not only a room to entertain guests in, but they was also a confinement barrier to keep people from exploring the rest of your house. It was common knowledge that to progress beyond the Living room in someone else's home uninvited was very bad manners.

As a modern society, we are eliminating the socializing room. A pessimist would look at it that way. At the same time, we are eliminating the confinement barrier and making our homes more available to invited guests.

We are by-passing the living room tradition and letting our guests directly into our family rooms. We are in a sense, letting our guests into our places of rest and retreat.

Take it however you want. It's just a house, but I always have to get all philosophical about everything.
