Desert landscaping is becoming really popular because of its water conservation methods. By using drip irrigation for plants we are able to water only the plants, not the weeds.
We have learned a lot about how to have beautiful yards and gardens while still being able to conserve water. It doesn't seem likely that a desert would be a good place for a garden, but the soil and the heat makes excellent conditions for plant life. As long as there is enough water to make things flourish.
Raised beds are really quite popular in desert gardens because they are easier to weed and water.
