Stairs need abundant light when they're being used a lot. Incandescent or fluorescent lighting is good for stairways because the bulbs are bright. I have always liked spiral stairs for their sleek style, but they are a much bigger falling hazard than normal stairs. The least we can do to make them a little safer is to brighten up the steps.
Stair lighting is much easier to install before the walls have sheet rock or the stairs are covered. Low voltage wiring uses a small gauge cable that is easy to run and is able to hide quite easily. Also low voltage lighting is great for alternative power sources during power outages. For example, if you have to use a car inverter to run your low voltage lighting during a power outage, it will work really well. That way you won't be completely in the dark.
