Material-roofing for remodelers is different from new home construction for the same reason as always. The old roof needs to be taken off and replaced with new material.
Sometimes the plywood can be left on. It all depends if there has been water damage. You will also need to look extra carefully on the edges of the eaves for damage. That's where the most stress is put on roofs from ice, snow, and rain. That's where roofs will start to break down. Also check in the valleys and ridges for possible leaks and cracks.
I prefer to put metal on most roofs because it increases the value and it makes the snow slide much easier.
Even though I prefer metal roofs overs asphalt shingles, the metal does need to be painted about every five years. There is a special paint made for metal roofs.
Over time, the galvanized screws can work loose. Wind can sometimes cause this to happen so it's important to inspect the material-roofing components every few years.

If you have asphalt shingles, you need to check them about every five years. They are a good choice in roofing projects, but they have different ratings according to how long they're expected to last under normal conditions.
If they start to get cracks, or they shrink around valleys, ridges, and flashing, water can get in. It's much easier to replace shingles than to replace the entire roof.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. It's also important to check around vent pipes, chimneys, and any other point of entry into the roof.
